Years later, Sonia Gandhi was to tell me that she knew nothing of my suspension. It was apparently a decision taken – in an excess of zeal – by the Central Disciplinary Committee off its own bat and, perhaps, accounted for the long time it took to unravel the decision. On re-reading the ‘show cause’ notice, I see that it does say it is the Central Disciplinary Committee that has decided to suspend me. I had assumed this was on the instructions or with the approval of the Congress President.
